What is the difference between relative and absolute paths?

Postby Typhoon Software » Thu Jan 19, 2006 1:39 am

Relative paths point to a location that is relative to the location of the current file.

For example, if you are linking to a PDF file from an HTML file and they are both in the same folder the link would just be the PDF filename. Other Examples are

myfile.pdf
../Acrobat/myFile.pdf
Data/myFile.pdf

Absolute paths point directly to the file and will NOT work when you move the folder (or CD) to a different machine. Examples are

C:\My Projects\myFile.pdf
D:\myFile.pdf

Always use relative paths when linking to files in your AutoRun projects.
